Cres Island
About the island
Did you know that Cres is also called ROMANTIC BEAUTY. Town Cres
The largest town on the island located in the northern part of the island, protected by a large and deep bay. The best way to experience the town is to take a walk through numerous narrow streets, discover ornaments on medieval buildings, see the reflection of the facades between wooden boats, pass along the waterfront bathed in the sun and decorated with caffe bars with terraces. The town Cres is called with good reason "Island or Little Venice".
This typical mediterranean town has it's own speciffic couisine and specialties that are, thanks to their mediterranean influence, based on fish, shellfish and crabs as well as island mutton, pasta, mediterranean vegetables and fruit, spice herbs, olives and olive oil.
Places on the island
Lubenice
Lubenice is situated on a mountain ridge at 382 m above sea level and it used to be antique Roman fortress and outpost. From Lubenice you can see a beautiful view of the entire Kvarner, islands and coast of Istra. Lubenice are a real jewel of Cres. Underneath Lubenice is a beautiful beach accesible by a pathway or a boat.
Beli
Beli that Romans used to call Caput insulae or "Islands' head". According to the legend King Bela IV took refuge during Mongol invasion and the town took king's name as it's own. The town is built solidly and densely and is isolated on the peak and is surrounded by inaccessible slopes and ravines. The roman bridge still hangs over the ravine and Beli proudly oversees its harbour, where antique galleys used to dock.
Martinščica
Martinščica is a fishing village in a pebbly cove and is the last peaceful resort and harbour before rugged rocks of cape Kijac.
Valun
Valun is situated in the deep bay protected by the cape Pernat. Valun is a picturesque fishing settlement, surrounded by beautifull pebble beaches, known for the discovery of bilingual Valun tablet. Valun is a place for excursions where everything is small and exceptional.
